Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is one of the most researched methods of therapy to date.  Francine Shapiro is recognized as the founder of this method of therapy.  It is particularly effective in reducing and/or ameliorating trauma. Trauma that comes from exposure to sexual abuse, physical abuse, verbal abuse, emotional abuse and vicarious abuse.  Vicarious abuse refers to the witnessing of abuse – not necessarily happening to you directly.

EMDR is a method that taps into the subconscious material of the individual – the material of experiences, thoughts, and feelings that become suppressed over the years of coping and functioning in an anti-emotional world.  In the viewing and placing of events in the time line of peoples’ lives, these events lose significance as the more present experiences gain their rightful places in their world.
